It is possible to use these symbols as an oracle in several different ways.
1. Sabian Oracle - Firstly centre yourself, then ask your question, and then call up the Sabian Oracle. This will pick one of the symbols at random.
2. Degree Oracles - These are based on the position of a planet or chart angle at the time the question is asked. Note, therefore that these symbols are not random, but are based on the cyclical motion of these astrological points through the degrees of the zodiac. The sun moves about 1 degree per day, so its symbol changes roughly once per day, whereas the moon moves about 13 degrees per day, so its symbol changes roughly once every two hours. The ascendant and midheaven pass through the entire zodiac each day, so their symbols change roughly once every 4 minutes. In order to decide which astrological point to use, take into account the symbolism of that point. For example, when asking questions about emotional issues you could choose the moon. When asking about career matters you could choose the midheaven, etc.

This Symbol speaks of calling for and being motivated for change. Revolution and revolutionaries come in all shapes and sizes; some instigate major changes in society, others are more into bucking the system and creating mini reforms in their own back yards. Although you may not be absolutely sure which direction to take, you are broadcasting and listening to messages around you. Look further within for the change in direction you need. Dramatizing one's situation can lead to overreaction, but doing nothing can lead to inertia and things staying exactly the same.
The need for reform. Challenging outlooks. Breaking constraints. Messages and news that awakens. Social or emotional causes. Printing presses. Publishing. Big announcements.
The Caution: Being argumentative, noisy, disruptive. Demanding change. Selfish agendas. Misinformation and disinformation. Old and outworn news.

This Symbol shows the ability, or the necessity, of being on the alert for intrusion and danger in your life and in the lives of those in your care, whether they are your own children or the children or youngsters of others. At times in your life, you may feel that conditions are changing and you and your family (sometimes friends) don't feel safe. You may need to move to a new situation which will provide more nourishment, safety and security and less danger. This can refer to an inner withdrawal; not wanting to watch the news, listen to bad information or thoughts and can happen on any level: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Concerns with survival. The endeavor to achieve mental, physical or emotional well being or peace. Safety and security concerns. Problems with rent or mortgage. Retreats.
The Caution: Not prepared to compromise or cohabit. Mess and rubbish. People not being able to live together. Insecure and unpredictable conditions. Noisy neighborhoods.
MERCURY
14TH DEGREE OF SCORPIO
TELEPHONE LINESMEN AT WORK INSTALLING NEW CONNECTIONS
This Symbol implies the ability, or the need, to be able to connect in with people or situations, sometimes with tools and equipment. This degree shows networking, along with the desire to talk to people or bring them together and improve communications. If people have been experiencing failure in fully expressing their thoughts, ideas or emotions, there is nothing to be achieved by just worrying about it; but rather do something to repair the lines of communication. Doing this can cause surprising new connections with people linking up, even from surprisingly isolated places. Sometimes expert advice and help must be called in; this degree often shows people who can do it.
The nervous system. The Internet. Linking people from all over. Reaching out to people. Acupuncture. Chatting. Networking. Mobile phones, emails, faxes, switchboards.
The Caution: Failing to repair communications. Being involved in other's lives. Gossip. Being fickle. Things getting out of control. Crossed lines. Jammed switchboards.
VENUS
8TH DEGREE OF SAGITTARIUS
DEEP WITHIN THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH, NEW ELEMENTS ARE BEING FORMED
This Symbol shows the ability, or the possibility, of having a lot going on underneath the surface, often more than other people would suspect. It speaks of shifts, sometimes huge shifts, going on on a deep level, and these are not always evident. Often, changes are quietly happening and all of a sudden the changes are reflected on the outside through an event or a complete shift in attitude. There will be new responses to life coming from deep within your mind and soul. This creation of new and essential levels of awareness is a part of the natural result of inner changes. Although they may not be easy to observe, very strong fundamental changes are happening.
Deep elemental processes and change. Shifting of conservative values. Mining in its many forms. Crystal healing. Colloidal minerals. Organic shifts and changes. Volcanoes.
The Caution: Moving forward while elements are still forming. Clinging stubbornly to outworn ways. Unhealthy growths. Denying inner processes as unimportant.
MARS
4TH DEGREE OF CAPRICORN
A GROUP OF PEOPLE ENTERING A LARGE CANOE FOR A JOURNEY BY WATER
This degree shows the ability, or the need, to “Journey” with others. Each person brings with them their individual stories, their needs and wants. They come together to accomplish something, to set out for somewhere. To embark on a journey with a number of people is to embark on an emotional discovery, along with learning the rules of society about interacting with others. With cooperation, and everyone heading in the same direction, there can be great success. You may find episodes when different and separate aspects of your personality come together to explore where you’re going.
Cooperation. A shared goal in sight. Being on a journey of destiny. Traveling or living together. Travels on the water. Rowing together. Workshops. Sharing destinations.
The Caution: Uncoordinated energies. Not wanting to go along with anybody. Rocking the boat. No one navigating. Lack of a realistic agenda or itinerary. Lack of privacy.
JUPITER
29TH DEGREE OF TAURUS
TWO COBBLERS WORKING SIDE BY SIDE AT A TABLE
This Symbol shows people working together, getting along in a partnership and making something of their lives through cooperation. To get the result you want you will probably need to work cooperatively with someone of equal skill and similar interest. Finding a partner with similar skills can give life a lift and lessen your own work load. Two or more people can bring not only their special talents but also their individual tools and perspectives. By sharing the task without ego or competition the outcome is not only better, but more harmonious and satisfying.
People sharing quietly and persistently in their labor. Partnerships and sharing. Repairs to the soul. Reflexology. Work benches. Demarcations of work. The marriage of minds.
The Caution: Wanting to complete a task with shared responsibilities yet gain all the credit. Committing oneself to tasks that don't bring personal satisfaction. Codependence.
SATURN
30TH DEGREE OF LEO
AN UNSEALED LETTER HAS VITAL AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION
This Symbol shows that there is a message you hold inside that you may wish to spread and you will be able to do it if you put the message into reality either by writing it down or speaking it. There can, at times, be a desire to reveal one’s inner feelings, however the opposite can also be true; you may feel very confronted by the thought of wearing your heart on your sleeve. However you transmit this ‘Vital and Confidential Information’, it needs to be done from the heart and with integrity. When this is done the right people can see it and benefit from it. Be aware of sharing information that isn’t yours to share or that breaks confidentiality with someone who trusts you.
Communicating in a trusting, carefree, easy way. Ideas, thoughts and emotions exposed through being too trusting. Shared thoughts and feelings. “Dear John” letters. Diaries.
The Caution: Playing games with information. Concealing for the purpose of deceit. Blurting things out. Betrayal of confidences. Gossip. Revealing what shouldn’t be revealed.
URANUS
17TH DEGREE OF VIRGO
A VOLCANIC ERUPTION BRINGING DUST CLOUDS, FLOWING LAVA, EARTH RUMBLINGS
This pictures a situation of catharsis. There may have been an effort made to hold things inside, but now there can be no more resistance and everything is forced out. This could be in the form of anger, but it can also be the explosive form of ideas. Let it blow, as resisting the urge can cause enormous pressure to build up. Look to see if the force of emotions is really related to the current situation.
Cathartic release. Thoughts or ideas pouring out. Torrents of emotion. Anger that needs expression. Pressure cooker environments. After shocks.
The Caution: Over-suppression of energy to the point of explosive disaster. Tantrums. Choking the air with sulfurous dust clouds. Overreactions.
NEPTUNE
12TH DEGREE OF LIBRA
MINERS ARE EMERGING FROM A DEEP COAL MINE
This Symbol shows the need to delve deep within your self or into a subject to find the answers. There is often a challenge in being able to go deeply enough to come up with what’s really sought after. But it is not enough to just find the message, you need to bring what you've learnt into the light of day so that you can benefit from this passage and breathe more freely. It's time to stop operating in the dark, to come to the surface and stop working so hard. There are rewards, however, from the passage into the depths; you can bring up jewels that otherwise would have remained underground, or undiscovered, or not revealed to the light.
Release from arduous labor. Coming into the light transformed. Caves, mines, miners. Deep subconscious healing. Messages emerging. The need to breathe. Extracting information. Being prepared to drill for answers. Lungs. Hypnotherapy.
The Caution: Gloomy outlook on life. Not seeing the light or potentials. Asthma, breathing problems. Being the ‘canary’ in the mine. Depression. Working too hard.
PLUTO
15TH DEGREE OF GEMINI
TWO DUTCH CHILDREN TALKING AND STUDYING THEIR LESSONS TOGETHER
This Symbol shows that you should be able to feel relaxed and comfortable with friends and able to speak your own truth. There's a need for clarity and for those of like mind to communicate spontaneous and creative ideas with each other. Feeling cut off and isolated because your beliefs or language are different from other people can propel you to finding those you can share your thoughts or your 'studies' with. There is usually, or should be, at least one person around you who can give you advice or lend you an ear when you need to express yourself in your own unique way to someone who understands.
Sharing innocent and carefree thoughts and ideals. Exchanging views with like-minded individuals. Finding a soul mate. Chitchatting about everyday life. Talking for hours.
The Caution: Failing to communicate. Taking an unsophisticated viewpoint. Excluding others as not worthy. Societal or racial prejudice. ‘Hearing voices’ that don't make sense.
CHIRON
23RD DEGREE OF VIRGO
A LION-TAMER RUSHES FEARLESSLY INTO THE CIRCUS ARENA
It is not that you need to extinguish powerful emotions and energies, but by skillfully manipulating the situation, these very wild emotions and energies will perform in a way that makes you the victor. Self-discipline and mastery are needed, along with being well rehearsed for what you are doing. There's a need to put fear behind you and to go for it. The question is: How prepared are you for the consequences?
Have faith and courage in your abilities. Sublimating one's animal instincts. Control.
The Caution: Needing to be in control and believing that things are dependent on your direction. Showing off and boasting. Plunging into situations, physically or emotionally, that are inherently dangerous without regard for the consequences.
THE NORTH NODE
11TH DEGREE OF ARIES
THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, OR THE RULER OF ONE'S COUNTRY
This Symbol shows that it's time to take charge, to expand your base of operations and to show that you have the integrity and the necessary energy to get things done. It's also about bringing a sense of order and discipline into your life - physically, spiritually or emotionally. Find your sense of inner power and make it work for you so others don’t lord it over you. Be in control of your own destiny and individuality.
Developing willpower. Receiving recognition. Discipline of thoughts, emotions and actions. Being in charge of your own life. The democratic process.
The Caution: Taking control, lording it over everyone, being overbearing. Egotistical and self-centered. Undermining others through a lack of awareness or self confidence.
THE ASCENDANT
28TH DEGREE OF GEMINI
SOCIETY GRANTING BANKRUPTCY, A PERSON LEAVES THE COURT WITH MIXED FEELINGS
This Symbol shows that there can be collective responsibility for issues and problems that occur for individuals and the collective will, or can, allow for a second chance for people to get back on their feet. This is likely to be times to accept such opportunities. There may be bitter disappointment, but a relief from burdening pressure as people are let off the hook and transgressions forgiven. Someone may be feeling a sense of abandonment because people have not lived up to their responsibilities. Staying optimistic about the future will help shift life into another gear.
Protection. Being free to get on with life. Starting back at square one. Renewal. Forgiveness. Release of pressure. Booms and busts. Risks for money or position. Pardons.
The Caution: Being let off the hook, able to commit mistakes again. Running full tilt and risking everything. Shifting responsibility. Going "off duty" regardless of consequences.
THE MIDHEAVEN
15TH DEGREE OF SAGITTARIUS
THE GROUND HOG LOOKING FOR ITS SHADOW ON GROUND HOG DAY
This Symbol shows the ability, or the desire, to have signs and predictions to give you insights into the future. By looking at past experience, you may find the signs, however, there’s a need to look closely at what’s happening as you could find yourself on a kind of merry-go-round; waking up each day to the same dilemma, question or problem. The solutions to your questions are often close by and easy to perceive and based in your normal life and relationships. Don't try to read too much into situations, but do take a good look at how you come across in relation to other people. Do you keep repeating the same mistakes? Perhaps you are someone who helps others get over their past, freeing them up for having a better, brighter future.
Look back, read the signs. Divination. Predictions. Prognosticating. Prophets that read the 'weather'. Waking up to the same situation every day. Psychoanalysis. Analyzing your shadow self.
The Caution: Scared to act without some message of confirmation. Looking for someone to blame. Relying on the same solution without consideration. Blizzards and cold.
